"Really? Seriously?
Definitions suck, but we all use them. Find the ones that work for you. On the other hand, choices are fun
Personally, my favorite is "au naturel, landing strip or ooh la la"."
Yeah, really, seriously. I don't understand any of these definitions people use to categorize one another. None of them make any logical sense to me.
I've heard people describe a black race and a white race. If we define race by color, then shouldn't there be a golden race, a brown race, a ruddy reddish race, and a freckled race? How many gradations of these colors do we want to recognize as different races? And technically, since no one is truly white or truly black (otherwise there would have to be a grey race for offspring of intermarriages), wouldn't it be more accurate to call people "off white or very dark brown race"?
Then someone mentioned the African-American race and the Asian race and I got confused. If race is based on what continent you are from, then shouldn't there be just be 7 races, an Australian race, a European race, a North American race, A South-American race, an Asian race an Arctican race and an Antarctican race? (I have never met anyone from Antarctica, has anyone else on this forum?)
Just to confuse me even more, someone said that Obama was African- American but I understand he was born in the US so how is he part of the African race. Then someone informed me that lineage travels officially through the father, so that is how he is African. So if race has nothing to do with where what continent you are from but is determined by where your father is from, then I would be of the European race even if I was black as soot because my father was born in Europe? But what if his grandfather was from Asia and his great grandfather was from Australia and his great-great grandfather was from America? Then what race would I be? Native American or perhaps Latino?
You say to just say pick a definition that works for me. Choices are fun. I agree. Some scientists say that we all originated in Africa, so even though I'm really, really white skinned, if I choose to call my self African-American and go to a predominately black neighbourhood in the US and high five everyone and say, "hello my brotha or my sista, they would probably not be offended by that right?
Oh and Dark Side: please don't try to trick me and tell me that race is based on something so superficial as if and how someone shaves their pubic hair. I may be a little naive but I'm not that ign'ant.

Well, I'm trying not to be politically incorrect, that's why I need someone more knowledgeable about these things to explain all the definitions to me.

Yes, Obama is African American , but I believe he had some Caucasian mixed in his background as well.
So is African- American a race? I thought white was a race and black was a race? No one ever mentioned an African American race to me before?
The revised standards will have five minimum categories for data on race: American Indian or Alaska Native, Asian, Black or African American, Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander, and White. There will be two categories for data on ethnicity: "Hispanic or Latino" and "Not Hispanic or Latino."
OK, so let me get this straight, there are now 5 races: White, Black, African-American, Native Alaskan, Native American, and Native Hawaiin or Other Pacific Islander. Is that right?
But I thought most African American's were black so wouldn't they be part of the black race? Or what if a person from Africa becomes an American citizen? Would they be part of the African-American race? What if they were one of those white Africans from the south with Dutch or English ancestry way back hundreds of years ago? Would they still be African-American race or would they be from the white race? If there is an African-American race why isn't there an African race or an American race?
What is the difference between Hispanic or Latino ethnicity? Could someone explain this to me so I don't offend anyone if I travel down south?
I have a brother-in-law whose parents were originally from Portugal, and speak a little Portuguese, a latin language, so are they Latino? My brother-in-law was born in Canada, though, and doesn't speak any Portuguese but he sure as hell could pass for a Mexican. If he moves to South America or the US, or even Brazil, would he be considered a Latino or a Canadian? Or is there a Latino-Canadian ethnicity?
In general, we follow the male lineage, so my father was English and my mother was French, however, we would be recorded as English because the line follows the father. We may in family history, or in our traditions and cultures and speech, be French and we consider ourselves both, but for reporting purposes, we are English.
Ok, thanks for clearing that up for me Sammie Lee. So, then, I am from the English race and Obama is from the Kenyan race. I think I got it now.

When I was 12, my mom married an Indian man (from actual India, not the fake Indians like we have in America). His little 5 yr old niece lived with them and used to follow me around and hang all over me every weekend when I came to visit. Whenever people would ask me if I was babysitting, I would, say "no, this is my cousin". I just loved messin' with people and seeing the looks on their face, trying to figure it out.

I have asked this question over and over again whenever a thread about racism appears on this forum, but no one has ever been able to answer my question. What race is Obama? Does he belong to the white race? Or does he belong to the black race?
Also, my brother who was born in Canada and is very white skinned, is married to a beautiful goldened skinned girl who was raised in Canada but born in Vietnam. So what race are their three beautiful boys? The oldest looks very Asian but the youngest doesn't look Asian at all, he looks just like my brother. So is one of the Asian race and the other of the white race?
I'm so confused, as I don't know how to categorize these people in my mind.
It's also causing problems for the Canadian grandparents. When the ones who were born in Vietnam take the youngest grandchild to the store, people look at them funny like they may have kidnapped a little white boy. When the ones who were born in England take the oldest one to the store, people look at them funny, like they may have kidnapped a little Asian boy.
And don't even get me started on my sister-in-law's sister who married a dark skinned Italian. Their kids don't look like any discernable race at all? How are people supposed to know what race they are so they can make the appropriate assessments/judgements about them and their culture?

Perhaps they are conspiring with each other to take over the forum and then the world!
I think a better definition of conspiracy theorists are people who make outlandish claims about secret people in power, (who are almost always unnamed and just some anonymous "they") What I notice most about them is they never have any solid evidence for their claims, just unproven conjecture. Anyone can do that. It takes no special knowledge or intellect.
There have always been the rich and powerful of society who have made back room deals to carve up the pieces of the pie for themselves. This is nothing new and is not some big secret conspiracy. It is just human nature. So is the claiming of special knowledge of such secret goings on by those who really have none. I think it is just a way for the powerless (and sometimes mentally ill) to make themselves feel more important and less powerless.
However, in the "real world" it is not what you "know" that counts, it is what you can prove. Conspiracy theorists can never prove their claims. Yet they insist they are true. That's why everyone thinks there nuts. It's not that everyone is conspiring against them. It's just that "normal" people in society know you have to be able to back up what you say with some credible evidence before you will be taken seriously by anyone else.
